Quilt Supplies for Summer Camp

Hello Paper Crafting Friends! I have a quilter friend, Dawn, that is looking for quilting donations for a summer camp. Here is a little bit about the camp in her words.

Each summer I volunteer at the Episcopal church camp in the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota. Two years ago, I started a sewing club to teach the young campers how to sew and provide them the opportunity to involve themselves in a service project. Over 80% of our campers live at or near the poverty level on the reservations of South Dakota. Part of my vision for this endeavor was to teach that no matter our means, we always have the ability to help others.

Our campers in grades five and six make pillow cases to donate to the children’s ward at local hospitals. The campers grades 7-12 make dresses for the Little Dresses for Africa project. Once their service gift is complete, we bring out the scrap box and they create, create, create!

Dawn is looking for the following donations since she sponsors all the supplies used in this program:

at least 24 inches cotton fabric, any pattern
double fold bias tape, at least 1 yard, any color
kid print cotton for pillowcases
any fabric scraps
polyfil in any size for pillow stuffing
portable sewing machines (your older model perhaps?)

Dawn returns to South Dakota a few times a year in her car so will take donations throughout the year. I will be seeing Dawn at my next weekend retreat which is October 19th in Poynette. If you can drop off donations to me before then, I can bring it to her at the retreat. Or you can stop during that weekend at the retreat if you want to tour the space and meet Dawn.

If you are cleaning out your fabric stash or know of someone that is, please pass this information to them. Dawn would also like to send sewing machines home with campers that express continued interest in sewing. So if you donate a sewing machine, it may be used during camp session or be re-homed where it will be used for many years to come!

Thanks for your help with carrying on the quilting tradition!

This is Portia. Dawn’s daughter that runs the camp.

I have several bundles of fabric that were donated to me from my husband’s aunt for my 4-H club members to make quilts but only one member was truly interested in completing a quilting project. I am sure my aunt-in-law would love to see the fabric being further donated for such a good cause. Please send pictures of completed projects to Shirley so she can send them to me and I can forward to my aunt-in-law.
